Riviera Maya

April 2014

We took this trip to celebrate the end of my intense 4 years of school and it was GREAT! This is by far the best resort I’ve ever stayed at. Every penny was worth it.

The Barcelo Maya Palace Resort is absolutely incredible. Wonderful staff, breathtaking views, delicious food, spacious rooms, and sooo many things to do. This resort is the highest levelled hotel in a 5-hotel resort. This means you can visit all of the other hotels on site and eat at many different restaurants. The Palace has its own beach as well which is nice because it doesn’t get as crowded as the others and it is adult only.

We decided to book this trip for 2 weeks instead of one. I must admit, 2 weeks is too long at an all inclusive. In my opinion, 10 days is the perfect amount of time if you don’t plan to do anything else.

We booked a catamaran as we usually do and it was horrible. The catamaran didn’t have a bar, didn’t have any activities and brought us to a half decent snorkelling site. On the other hand we decided to go on a tour of nearby cenotes and climb through an aerial park and it was great! So much fun. We ziplined across the forest, repelled down into a cave, swam in cenotes and had an authentic Mexican lunch.

We also visited Tulum ruins one afternoon. It’s about a 45 minute drive from our resort which isn’t bad and it was worth the drive. I recommend going down the stairs and spending a bit of time on the beach – it’s beautiful. We also took a taxi and went to visit Playa del Carmen for a day. There’s lots to see and do there ! My only regret is not going back at night to experience the nightlife but hey, next time!

I absolutely adored this resort and would recommend it to anyone. If I’m looking to lay on a beach and drink as many daiquiris as possible this is definitely where I’ll be.

If you do decide to book any resort in the Riviera Maya, make sure to pack yourself some water shoes. The beaches tend to be very rocky. It’s really uncomfortable and you can risk slipping or cutting yourself.

If you have any questions about Riviera Maya or Playa Del Carmen don’t hesitate to ask! 🙂
